CAPITAL REGION EXTENSION OF VOWS HOSTS RESOURCE FAIR TO FOCUS ON VETERAN EMPLOYMENT

First-time area event to highlight mutual benefits of veteran employment for both veterans and employers

ALBANY, New York – Ayco and UHY LLP today announced a new partnership focused on highlighting the benefits of veteran employment for both veterans and employers through the first-time Capital Region Extension of VOWS resource fair on Monday, November 9 at The Desmond Hotel in Albany, NY.

Capital Region Extension of VOWS is an extension of the Manhattan-based Veterans on Wall Street (VOWS), which was developed by a consortium of founding member banks, led by Goldman Sachs, Citi, Deutsche Bank, and HSBC and is dedicated to honoring former and current military personnel by facilitating career and business opportunities.

“The impact of VOWS inspired us to partner with UHY to create a Capital Region Extension of VOWS,” said Tim O’Hara, Ayco’s President and CEO. “The resource fair will afford veteran job seekers an opportunity to network, companies an opportunity to share best practices and military leaders the chance to speak to employers about the advantages of hiring veterans.  We are grateful for the tremendous support and interest we have received from company sponsors and veteran groups in our community. Our hope is that collectively we will illustrate how a business can benefit from the talents of veterans and establishment of a veterans network and facilitate connections for veterans and employers in the Capital Region.”

“Veterans possess many of the skills and attributes we value as a financial services firm,” said Howard Foote, UHY LLP Office Managing Partner–Capital Region. “We are confident this symposium will not only provide veterans with valuable resources as they seek civilian employment, but will also bring together members of the corporate community who have a shared interest in the integration of veterans into the Capital Region workforce.”

The day-long Capital Region Extension of VOWS resource fair will be divided into two sessions:

  • The morning program, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., will provide transitioning veterans and family members with the opportunity to network with top companies, understand the value they bring to employers, and how to apply these attributes in their search for post-military employment.
  • The afternoon program, which will be held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., will provide employers with the opportunity to learn about the benefits, insight and unique skill sets veteran employees bring to companies and how these attributes translate to business.

The presentations will include a keynote address from Brigadier General Michael Swezey of the New York National Guard. Ayco’s Tim O’Hara will also discuss how the company and its veteran employee population have benefited from the establishment of the Veterans Network, a channel of the Ayco Diversity Network.

Additional speakers include Ray Gagnon, chairman of The Chamber of Schenectady County’s Unified Military Affairs Council, who will discuss how military skills translate to business; as well as a presentation from the Times Union and Military.com about the best resources available to veterans seeking employment and how employers can find the best talent within the veteran community.

Local veteran-focused non-profit organizations Yellow Ribbon Program and Saratoga WarHorse will be available to provide information on the opportunities and resources available to veterans through their programs.

Each session will conclude with networking opportunities with Capital Region companies, including The Ayco Company, UHY LLP, Albany Medical Center, DeCrescente Distributing Company, Ebiz Docs, Ed Lewi Associates, Times Union, Trustco Bank, Veterans Business Council of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, Hannaford Supermarkets, and other local employers, colleges and universities.
