Cardona’s Market honors legendary Capital Region meteorologist Steve Caporizzo with celebrity sandwich

Cardona’s Market today introduced its newest celebrity sandwich named for longtime NEWS10 meteorologist Steve Caporizzo, who recently announced his retirement following 35 heralded years at WTEN.

The family-owned Italian market and catering company unveiled “The Cap” in honor of the well-known TV weather personality’s nickname. Caporizzo joined Cardona’s Market representatives to take part in a ceremonial first bite at Cardona’s Latham Market on Thursday afternoon.

The Cap, which may also double for Caprese, features dry cured cappy accompanied by fresh mozzarella, spring mix, marinated tomato, cracked black pepper and fresh chopped basil, topped with hot pepper relish and roasted garlic spread, all served on a toasted roll.

It will be the featured sandwich this summer at all three Cardona’s Market locations beginning Sunday, June 1.

“Steve Caporizzo has been a fixture both on the news and within the local community for as long as we can remember,” said Cardona’s Co-Owner and Executive Chef Robert Cardona, Jr. “We could not be more excited for the launch of this appetizing, limited-edition creation and to support Steve’s longstanding work with The Pet Connection.”

Caporizzo is known for the work he does within the animal adoption community, thanks in large part to his long-running “Pet Connection” TV segment. As a way to commemorate his passion for pets, a portion of the profits from “The Cap” will support both Kitten Angels and Free to be Me Rescue, two Capital Region non-profit animal rescue and adoption organizations. Located in Mayfield, Kitten Angels is dedicated to rescuing abandoned and orphaned kittens, pregnant cats, and mama cats, while Free to be Me Rescue, based in Delmar, works to find homes for pets in need.

“I am honored that Cardona’s chose to create The Cap and excited to use it to support a cause that has been near and dear to my heart for so long,” said Caporizzo. “Today’s launch allows me to celebrate the dawn of a new era along with the people of the Capital Region that I have been blessed to serve for over 35 years.”

Named NEWS10’s Chief Meteorologist in December 1989, Caporizzo maintained his role at the station for 35 years prior to announcing his retirement this past January. His presence within the local community during his tenure has been meaningful, as demonstrated by his visits to more than 1,500 schools, civic groups, and senior centers. Caporizzo’s Pet Connection segment has been the catalyst for finding homes for more than 30,000 pets and raising more than $1.5 million since 1990.

Cardona’s Market features three convenient locations at 340 Delaware Avenue in Albany; 9 Cobbee Road in Latham; and 222 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. The Albany and Latham markets are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the Saratoga market is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. All three locations are open Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cardona’s Market was named 2024 Family Business of the Year by the Albany Business Review and was once again voted Best Caterer of the Capital Region for the fourth consecutive year by Times Union readers.
