ALBANY, New York – Hannaford Supermarkets today donated approximately $10,000 worth of supplies and product to renovate and stock the Salvation Army Food Pantry in Albany’s South End neighborhood.

The funding will enable the Salvation Army Food Pantry and its partner organization, The Food Pantries for the Capital District, to provide a greater variety of food and an enhanced atmosphere for families who rely on the pantry as a vital community resource.

Volunteers from Hannaford joined representatives from The Food Pantries for the Capital District to install the new shelving and stock 2,000 pounds of product. The donation also allowed for the purchase of two new upright freezers and coolers.

“Hannaford Supermarkets is strongly committed to helping alleviate hunger throughout the communities that we serve. As we celebrate the holiday season, it’s more important than ever to lend our support to the organizations who share in our mission to combat hunger,” said Hannaford Supermarkets Community Relations Specialist Brian Fabre. “We hope this donation assists The Food Pantries for the Capital District in its efforts to feed those most in need.”

In 2016, the Salvation Army Food Pantry provided approximately 17,000 meals to residents of Albany’s South End neighborhood.

“As a coalition of more than 60 local food pantries, this partnership is a perfect example of how by working together we can do more than any of us alone. We can’t thank Hannaford enough for helping to improve the Salvation Army Food Pantry in Albany,” said Natasha Pernicka, Executive Director of The Food Pantries for the Capital District.

The Food Pantries for the Capital District is a coalition of more than 60 food pantries located in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties. Annually, The Food Pantries helps fund, collect, and deliver 2.7 million pounds of food for food member pantries, which helps provide food to 47,000 people for approximately 2.7 million meals. The Food Pantries also supports member pantries by providing service coordination, education and training, opportunities for networking, and infant needs and holiday meals programs.
